Socrates said, “The life which is unexamined is not worth living. ” What a true statement. To examine oneself is to know oneself, and God’s desire is for man to know himself. The prodigal returned home when, “he came to himself.” The hymn writer Benjamin Waugh put it, “Lord it is coming to ourselves when first we come to thee.” The Psalmist cried, “Search me O God and know my heart, try me and know my thoughts, and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Ps. 139:23;) The Psalmist wanted to see himself the way God saw him. A person can only truly know him or herself when the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ shines into your heart; it is then you realise the need of God’s forgiveness, because then, you realise you are a sinner and need a Saviour – the Saviour Jesus Christ. Saint John’s Gospel Ch.3: v 16; tells us, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” To know God’s love is to know and see oneself in a new light – that light is the Light of Life.
